The soloist with Shades of Praise is New
Orleans-born Phillip Manuel was a friend and protégé of fellow New Orleanian
Aaron Neville. Neville defines
Manuel as, "...one of my favourite jazz singers...." No faint praise
here. Manuel's New Orleans roots
betray themselves in the eclectic nature of his music. Manuel has the mellow charm of Nat King
Cole and the electric spontaneity of Ella Fitzgerald come to life as Phillip's
rich elegant voice braids with the other instruments in a colourful tapestry...
Phillip allows himself to be carried away by emotion ....” Scott Aiges, Music
Editor, New Orleans Times Picayune.
