Many people
from minority ethnic communities not getting access to health services according
Cairde. This has been highlighted
through the work of their Health Information and Advocacy Centre (HIAC) which
Cairde opened earlier this year. In it’s first six months of operation HIAC has
dealth with over 1,300 people. Such a demand is clear illustration of the
unique and substantial health needs of ethnic minority communities which are
not being met by current health services.
HIAC is a one
stop shop providing relevant, accurate and culturally appropriate health
information and advocacy to individuals and groups from ethnic minority
communities. In reality this means
assisting people understanding the health services and how they might do such
things as finding a GP, going to hospital or seeking payment for their health
costs. The Centre is also developing information that can be understood and
that ethnic minority communities can relate to given their their different
cultural experience.
