Thinking about the environmental cost of cruise liners

Cruise liner in Cobh, Cork, Ireland (Photo Worldreach)

Two cruise liners arrived over the weekend in Cobh, Cork, Ireland where I could clearly see the economic benefits. Cafes and shops were busy and local people were employed providing entertainment, bus tours and other services. 'Jewel of the Seas' (Royal Caribbean International) carrying 2110 passengers and the 'Emerald Princess' (Princess Cruises) with 3,000 passengers on board not including staff. These were impressive looking ships and are essentially floating towns. It got me thinking about the environmental cost.
