7,500 mile open cockpit record breaking flight for aviation adventurer heading across N. America & Atlantic

Like the first days of flying with limited instruments and the wind in your hair

International aviation adventurer and world record holder Norman Surplus plans to fly his gyrocopter registered G-YROX (aka “Roxy”) 7,500 mile flight across the North America and the Atlantic. In his open cockpit, slow flying and with limited range/ instruments this aircraft it is like flying back in the pioneering early days of flight with the wind literally on your face and in your hair. Norman has already traversed 18 countries, crossed forest fires, severe thunderstorms, arid deserts, even a dip in a Thai lake and then hit the Russian wall. The security authorities prevented him flying there despite three years of asking but now this intrepid pilot will be able to fly on into much friendlier airspace. He will stop off in 14 states in the US and will attempt to set a number of FAI world records on the way.  Norman is promoting awareness of bowel cancer, while traveling, as a result of his own direct experience of battling with the condition..

As a result of his flight half way around the world, Norman is a nine times Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) World Record holder. Together with his record setting gyrocopter he will depart Oregon on the US west coast to start a world record 7,500 mile flight across the US, Canada and Nth. Atlantic on the 1st of June 2015.  

With the aircraft's open cockpit design the pilot is exposed to the elements, slow flying, with limited range and no autopilot, it is like “flying by the seat of the pants”.  It is reminiscent of the pioneering world of the 1920’s and 30’s, back in the very early days of powered flight. Norman has already flown into and crossed the UK, France, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE, Oman, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines and Japan. On his way he crossed forest fires in Myanmar, severe thunderstorms over the Saudi Arabian desert, several unscheduled off airfield landings and even a dip in a Thai lake.

He started out in N. Ireland in 2010 heading eastbound around the globe, but then got stuck in Japan for three years while Russian authorities would not allow his UK registered aircraft into their airspace.

Because of his own experience of bowel cancer in 2003/04 Norman has promoted awareness of the issue on his travels.  This has included giving lectures and using every media opportunity to raise the issue. In fact during his recovery from bowel cancer Norman first came across the unique little aircraft, the gyrocopter, and the rest as they say is history…. To date G-YROX is and remains the furthest flown Autogyro aircraft in History

Speaking about the flight Norman said “It is not always the real, physical, hurdles of the flight that have posed the greatest threat to the adventure - although there have been plenty of those - often the major hurdles remain largely bureaucratic. Having said this in the US it is an aviators dream. What ever the challenges, in times of doubt I can always recall how my situation was back in 2003/04 when I was dealing with a very different set of procedures, the outcome of which was equally uncertain, namely bowel cancer surgery and chemotherapy. The absolute uncertainty I felt in those months during treatment by far outweighs any uncertainty I may feel about any bureaucratic delays that occur today. I shall remain consistently happy just to be here at all.”  

Norman will depart McMinnville Municipal Airport (KMMV), Oregon, USA in the morning of June 1st. 2015. The actual record attempt will start from close by the Pacific coast at Tillamook Airport (KTMK), Oregon, USA. He will travel over Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Maine, Massachusetts and Maine. Departure day is subject to suitable weather conditions and all necessary flight permits from the US FAA and UK CAA

400+mph 'Jet Reaction' jetbike speed test to prepare for world ‘two-wheeled land speed’ record

"586 feet every second, the length of a football pitch in the blink of an eye"

400 miles an hour, 586 feet every second, the length of a football pitch travelled in little more than the blink of an eye.  This is the aim of a British team who plan an assault on the world ‘two-wheeled land speed’ record. Enclosed in a space age body the jetbike, named ‘Jet Reaction’, is uniquely propelled by a specially modified helicopter engine! In anticipation of the world record attempt in the US the team are planning a full powered speed test in the UK in late May (23rd., 24th. & 25th). Conditions permitting, Jet Reaction is expected to challenge a number of UK speed records, during the tests.

Unlike all of the past record holders and many of the current contenders, which are mechanically driven (chain or driveshaft), Jet Reaction uses thrust power provided by a specially modified helicopter. Some of the most advanced technology was used in its design including a Computational Fluid Dynamics study completed by Huddersfield University. Measuring 20ft (6.1m) long the streamliner vehicle is capable of travelling at speeds of up to 450mph driven by a gas turbine engine. Weighing, including fuel and oil, 560KG the power output is boosted by a specially designed afterburner unit.

Richard Brown (50), Oxfordshire, England based in engineer, conceived and built the jetbike. He is no stranger to this technology and similar endeavours as he has designed, built and piloted two similar vehicles going back to the mid 90’s. In fact in 1999 Richard came tantalisingly close to realising his long held dream when he rode his rocket powered creation, the Mach 3 Challenger to an officially recorded speed of 332.887mph. This was the fastest speed ever seen on two wheels at that time. However, unable to complete a return run due to track conditions he had to settle for what might be considered a “Silver Medal” and not the “Gold” of a world record.

Talking about the Jet Reaction project Richard Brown said, "An outright Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM ) land speed record is one of the finest opportunities any team can have to demonstrate engineering innovation, within the rules applied by the relevant governing bodies the challenge is to engineer a superior machine making it the best in the world. It is also an opportunity to demonstrate how a small team of talented individuals without vast financial support can produce a world-class vehicle."

The official world record will take place on the famous Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, USA in September 2015. As part of this build up Jet Reaction will run with three wheels as well as two for the purposes of data acquisition at Pendine Sands, Wales, UK.

Austria's skiing Mecca is host to the best mountain bikers. For four days an international selection of top athletes and ambitious hobby bikers competes for fame and glory.  They can also collect UCI points and prize money in the mountains of the beautiful and dramatic Schladming-Dachstein region.

 ‘Jetbike’ speed test to prepare for 400+mph world two-wheeled land speed record

A Brit designed and built ‘Jetbike’ which is being speed tested at Pendine Sands, Wales.  This is to prepare for 400+mph world two-wheeled land speed record at Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah.

Solar tuk tuk from Indian to UK for green transport
Bangalore based engineer Naveen Rabelli is planning to drive his self-designed / built solar tuk tuk from his home to the UK. As a result of the launch of this project last year we achieved media coverage across India and the globe.

The Glocknerman cycling marathonThe Glocknerman is an utra bicycle marathon for individuals and teams. It is one of the oldest existing extreme cycling events with start and finish in Graz, Austria. The participants must cycle 1010 km and not only fight for the popular "Glocknerman" title, but also for Ultra Bike Marathon World Champion.

Jet luge world record speed attempt
Australian Daz (The Cowboy) Fellows will attempt to break the Guinness world land speed record for the fastest powered streetluge. His streetluge, a man-sized skateboard, has the added bonus of two jet engines with afterburners creating a ‘jet luge”. Daz hopes to beat the current record of nearly 190 km/h (120mph) by a factor of two+ while using only his feet as breaks! Daz is well prepared for the record through years of stunt work in TV and streetluge in Australia.

The world’s oldest and "toughest" international mountain bike race
The world’s oldest and said to be the toughest international mountain bike race (MTB) is set to take place in the remote far north of Australia. Starting October 18th the ‘Crocodile Trophy’ will see over 100 professional and amateur riders from around the world cycle 900km (nearly 560 miles) - basically nine marathons in a row. The participants will ride nine stages through lush rainforests, dry intense heat of the Outback and mountain trails climbing to 3,000m, finishing on the tropical coast of Queensland.
